About Max
My son, Max, was an extraordinary young man who touched the lives of everyone who knew him. He was handsome, intelligent, creative, sensitive, funny, and incredibly talented. His large, soulful brown eyes reflected his deep emotions, and his beautiful smile could light up any room.
From a young age, Max showed remarkable abilities. He spoke in full sentences by 18 months, memorized all the NFL team names and their corresponding cities by age two, and read his first Harry Potter book in the first grade. His intellectual curiosity and creativity knew no bounds. In high school, he was the drummer of the band, The Young Giants, that played gigs around the city, and he produced his own magazine, Young and Hungry, showcasing his diverse talents and interests.
He expressed his thoughts and feelings through poetry, short stories, music, and song lyrics. His creative spirit extended to stand-up comedy, where he wrote material that brought joy and laughter to others.
Despite his many gifts, Max struggled with the weight of mental illness. He battled depression and was deeply affected by the injustices and unfairness he saw in the world. His sensitivity and empathy were both his greatest strengths and his heaviest burdens.
In June 2020, after a long and courageous fight with his mental health, Max died by suicide at the age of 25. His passing left an indescribable void in the hearts of those who loved him.
Max’s life, though tragically short, was filled with moments of brilliance and beauty. He leaves behind a legacy of creativity, compassion, and a reminder of the importance of understanding and supporting those who struggle with mental illness.
Through my book, My Unexpected Journey: Reflections After Losing My Son to Suicide, and my grief work, I hope to honor Max’s memory by elevating the conversation around mental health, suicide, and loss and grief, and by offering support to other bereaved parents.
Max’s story is a testament to the profound impact one person can have on the world. His life reminds us to cherish our loved ones, advocate for mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and strive for a world where compassion and understanding prevail.
